Professor Shalom Schwartz to give the Plenary Address at the Values Impact Forum.

Professor Shalom Schwartz was awarded a BHP Billiton Visiting Professor Program and a UWA Institute for Advanced Studies Visiting Fellowship Grant to visit UWA for the opening of the Centre for Human and Cultural Values in February 2018. He will also conduct a masterclass on values research for postgraduate and early career researchers on February 21, 2018.

PhD candidate Karen Winter to present at the 2018 Teaching and Learning Forum in Perth.

Centre for Human and Cultural Values PhD candidate Karen Winter will present a paper on “Personal values and motivational interference” at this year’s Teaching and Learning Forum at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle. This research was conducted at UWA in collaboration with Professor Julie Lee and Dr Uwana Evers.

Professor Ariel Knafo-Noam to give the Keynote Address on Values and the Socialisation of Children at the Values Impact Forum.

Professor Ariel Knafo-Noam was awarded a BHP Billiton Visiting Professor Program grant to visit UWA during the opening of the Centre for Human and Cultural Values in February 2018. He will meet with staff and students during his visit.

Centre’s newest graduate Dr Sheng Ye

Dr Ye successfully completed her thesis “The relationship between personal values and behaviors in a tourism context” and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Western Australia on 17 November, 2017. Her thesis included three excellent papers, one of which was published in Tourism Management earlier this year. The other two are under review at prestigious journals. Dr Ye has been an integral part of our team for the last 4 years. She has an excellent research career ahead of her. Well done!

February/March TBC – UWA Business School Showcase at the Perth Library

Julie Lee and Paul Chan from Pureprofile are featured speakers at this years showcase, where they will talk about their research partnership. This event provides business leaders with an opportunity to network and discuss with research experts how the university can assist with solving key business issues and explore government funding mechanism.

February 22-23 –  Values Impact Forum at UWA

Join us for a unique 2-day event at UWA that brings together academics, industry and policy makers to examine how values impact important social issues.  This years FORUM focuses on four important themes:

  1. Values and the socialisation of children (Keynote Ariel Knafo);
  2. Values and public opinion (Keynotes Jan Cieciuch/Rory Fitzgerald);
  3. Values and philanthropy (Keynote Joanne Sneddon); and
  4. Values and consumer behaviour (Keynote Julie Lee). Professor Shalom Schwartz will provide the plenary addresses.

At the end of each day, expert panels from academia, industry, and government come together to set the agenda for future research. More info >

February 10 to April 21 –  Zadok Ben-David: Blackfield Exhibit, Perth Festival at the Art Gallery, UWA

The Centre for Human and Cultural Values is the Campus Partner for this breathtaking installation that will be on display at the Art Gallery, as part of the Perth Film Festival

Blackfield is a space-specific floor installation, containing up to 20.000 steel etched flowers deriving from 19th Century Victorian encyclopaedias. The work reflects on notions such as perception and perspective, and in its delicate modesty the installation brings up powerful questions regarding life and death. More info >

December 4-6 – ANZMAC 2017 Special Session on Values at RMIT University, Melbourne

“New directions in values theory, method and applications” 

A discussion of recent developments in the theory, method and applications of human values in a Special Session at the Australia & New Zealand Marketing Academy Conference (ANZMAC2017). Panellists include  Julie Lee, Uwana Evers, Fang Liu, Sheng Ye and Geoff Soutar from the University of Western Australia.

November 22  Associate Professor Hester van Herk to run a workshop on the European Social Survey at UWA

In the workshop on the ESS, Hester will provide insight on the content of the ESS data, obtaining background information, accessing and downloading ESS data, and selecting data from specific nations and from specific years. The Schwartz human values scale in the survey will be used to illustrate the opportunities the ESS has for cross-cultural researchers.

November 28 – Professor Hester van Herk to give a seminar on the European Social Survey at UWA

The seminar will provide an introduction into the European Social Survey (ESS). The ESS is a large-scale bi-annual survey in more than 30 European nations. The samples are representative of the population in the respective nations with sample sizes of 500 to over 1000. The first wave of the survey was in 2002 and the next will be 2018, providing 9 waves of data about the values, opinions, attitudes and beliefs of Europe’s citizens. A specific example of variables measured are the Schwartz’ human values that are available in all waves across all countries. In the seminar, Hester will discuss questionnaire design, sampling, and data collection, and provide insight into the challenges that non-response and response styles provide. Topics will be illustrated using publications based on ESS data.
